The rapid moving walkway

Currently unique in the world, the rapid moving walkway is the result of considerable research and development work carried out in cooperation with RATP, the Paris public transport authority. The Rapid Moving Walkway has been opened to the public since july 2002 in the Montparnasse metro station in Paris.

Gateway is designed to carry passengers at a speed of up to 10 km/h and thus facilitate transport in large cities, both above ground and underground.
Its aims are, in particular :

to facilitate the use of public transport;
to provide an efficient solution for links between two or more transport sites (airport or railway station terminals, for example);
to encourage movements in a continuous flow over distances of several hundred of metres in complete safety.

Since the rapid moving walkway was inaugurated in the Montparnasse Bienvenüe metro station, million people have used this new means of transport.

In 2005 it received final approval for commercial operation and now runs 14 hours daily without any special constraints. It has thereby proved the industrial validity of the concept: transporting people in a continuous flow over several hundred of metres at a speed of around 10 km/hour, at a fraction of what would cost competing systems.
